Laura Shoop Is New Daughter to Tevye in Fiddler
By KENNETH JONES

Published: June 1, 2004

Laura Shoop will join the community of Anatevka June 11 when she replaces departing Laura Michelle Kelly as Hodel in the Broadway revival of Fiddler on the Roof.

It had been known since the beginning of the revival's run at the Minskoff Theatre that Kelly would leave the show to prepare for her London role as Mary Poppins in the new stage version of the classic Disney picture. Kelly exits June 10.
Hodel is one of five Russian-Jewish daughters of Tevye the dairyman in the musical by Joseph Stein, Sheldon Harnick and Jerry Bock. David Leveaux directed the new staging, which stars Alfred Molina as Tevye. Three of the daughters, including Hodel, marry non-traditionally, creating the major conflicts in the show.

Shoop’s previous Broadway credit was Oklahoma!. She appeared in the national tour of Thoroughly Modern Millie and in regional productions of Carousel (Paper Mill), Lady in the Dark (Prince), …Forum (Sacramento). She studied in The Juilliard School Dance Program.
